HISTORY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT

Medical Physics, UMMC

The Medical Physics Unit is a unit which provides medical services, especially in the field of technical, clinical support and research. All activities carried out are based on codes and practices in accordance with the rules and guidelines set by the licensed agencies and the Ministry of Health Malaysia. Medical physics is a branch of physics incorporating the application of physics and engineering to medicine and health. Medical physicists work closely with medical doctors and are employed in universities, medical schools, hospitals and medical research institutes

 
The unit involves the cooperation of science officers (physics) of UMMC directly and medical physics lecturers at University Malaya indirectly. This unit was approved by the UMMC Board of Management in 2005. It is placed under the auspices of the UMMC Clinical Support Governance which is directly responsible to the Deputy Director (Professional)
 
The main area that medical physicist involves are in the treatment of cancer by ionizing radiation (radiation oncology), ultrasound and nuclear magnetic resonance (diagnostic radiology), diagnostic imaging with radionuclides (nuclear medicine), diagnostic imaging with x rays, and in the study of radiation hazards and radiation protection (health physics).
 
Medical physicists are generally involved in four areas of activities: -
• clinical service and consultation
• research and development
• teaching
• administration
Biomedical Engineering Unit, UMMC

The Biomedical Engineering Unit had started the services in 1966 which was known as the Electronics & Biomedical Division under the auspices of the Engineering & Maintenance Unit (now known as the Engineering Department)

On 22 March 2007, part of the Electronics & Biomedical Division was taken out from PTJ Sumber Perkhidmatan (previously known as a the Engineering & Maintenance Unit ) and placed under the Director of UMMC.This unit was then known as the Biomedical Engineering Unit until today.

The main duty of this unit is to ensure that all biomedical equipment for patient usage is safe and well-functioning in UMMC. All activities carried out are based on codes and practices in accordance with the rules and guidelines set by the Medical Devices Agency (MDA) and the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

Biomedical Engineering Unit provides management and coordination service in:
• Procurement, testing and commissioning of new biomedical equipment
• Preventive maintenance of the biomedical equipment
• Breakdown maintenance of biomedical equipment
• Disposal of the biomedical equipment
